Snakes in Movies |
Boas, Pythons, and Anacondas in Movies |
This is an alphabetical list of movies with a boa, a python, or an anaconda in them, taken from the main Snakes in Movies List.
In the real world, Boas are found in the Americas, Pythons are found in Asia and Australia, and Anacondas are found in South America, but in movies they can occur just about anywhere. Since Boas and Pythons are relatively docile, slow-moving, and easy to obtain non-venomous snakes,
they are commonly used in movies, often to represent venomous snakes. Since some species can grow to a very large size,
they are often used to portray giant deadly snakes.

Paul Temple Returns (Bombay Waterfront) (1952) IMDB
This British mystery is the last in a series of four films about the amateur detective Paul Temple. Here he searches for a serial killer who is terrorizing London using the name "The Marquis."
A snake (a large python) is left in a room to guard it from intruders. It's really just a plot device to enable the hero to shoot at the floor. He misses the snake, but breaks the floor tile the snake was crawling on, exposing a secret hiding place that the snake is protecting.
Using a snake as a guard is a nice exotic addition to a movie but in reality it's a bad idea because snakes will try to hide at any opportunity, unlike a guard dog.

Triangle of Sadness (2022) (IMDB)
Nominated for Academy Awards for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Director, and Best Screenplay, this movie satires the relationships between the rich and the working class and between power and beauty. After a small group of survivors from a cruise for the ultra-wealthy is shipwrecked on a beach, they huddle together in a raft at night. Strange loud noises from the dark jungle scare them and us as well. The camera shows us two Boa Constrictors crawling in some vines towards the raft, just to scare us even more, but that fright is never paid off. Unfortunately for this list, an army of snakes did not descend on the raft, nobody is bitten or strangled by snakes and nobody heroically fights them off. The snakes are simply never shown again. I know I'm always begging for a more realistic treatment of snakes in movies, and that's what this is, but I was still disappointed, having learned to expect misinformation and over-dramatization.
