Michael (2026)

Spoiler Alert !

Some of these pictures and descriptions may give away plot details that you might not want to know before watching the film.

This is a biography of Michael Jackson's early life, from his days as a boy singer with the Jackson Five, to the beginning of his solo career that led him to become the biggest entertainer in the world. Most music biopics are full of clichés and follow a similar outline, and this one is similar, but the music and the acting make it better than most, especially the acting of Jaafar Jackson, who plays Michael. Instead of re-recording the music as they often do in music bios, this one uses the original songs. Jackson lip syncs and dances so convincingly you easily forget he's not the real Michael. The audience agreed, as the movie made history as the highest-grossing biopic, and the first one to ever make over a billion dollars at the box office.

In the middle of the movie, after Michael has become a very successful solo star, there is a scene where we see one of Michael's pet snakes draped over a couch in the background. (We have already seen some of his other exotic pets - a chimpanzee, a giraffe, a llama, and some birds.) Michael is in his bedroom with his sister LaToya (Jessica Sula) opening fan mail and talking about the surgery he just had to reduce the size of his nose. He tells her he wanted a new look, to reinvent himself so the world sees him differently, not like a boy in a kid band anymore. He says it was time for him to take control of his own destiny. Then one of his brothers comes in to tell Michael his father Joseph wants to meet with him. Before he leaves, Michael pets the snake and tells LaToya:

"Careful, he's hungry."
LaToya: "How hungry."
Michael: "He's pretty hungry.
LaToya: "For, like, a mouse?"
Michael: (Chuckles) "Maybe."
LaToya slowly turns to look at the snake.

At first glance, the scene appears to be trivial, with Michael just teasing his little sister about the snake, but it's a pivotal moment in his story. He's psyching himself up for the meeting with his father. He knows that his father is also hungry like a large predator, and is going to demand something more from Michael who wants to go in a different direction. Joseph has been overbearing and controlling of Michael's life and career, at times beating him into submission, but as Michael just announced, he's not going to put up with that anymore. During the meeting Michael runs off, then hires his own lawyer, fires Joseph and hires a new manager, finally taking control of his own destiny.

As far as I can tell, the Boa Constrictor we see in the scene is a real snake. It barely moves, but that's not unusual with a big boa. They get very sluggish, especially if it's cold or if they have just eaten. If it is a prop snake or a special effect, then they did a great job with it and fooled me. It's so hard to tell what's real and what's fake these days. I wonder if we'll ever know for sure anymore.

Michael famously had pet snakes, including a large Boa Constrictor named "Muscles" which I assume is who this snake is supposed to be. He also had Burmese Pythons, including a large albino snake named Madonna, then Sunshine, and a "300 pound Burmese" named "Rosie the Crusher" or just "Crusher."

There's a clip from a POW MAG interview with Jackson where he talks about his Boa Constrictor.
