These are songs with lyrics that mention female Californians known as "California girls," or songs that use that phrase, or refer to a woman from California in some other way, such as a "Malibu Barbie," an "L.A. woman," or a "valley girl," etc. Some singers even express their disdain for the stereotype, such as in the Magnetic Fields song with its chorus "I hate California girls." The songs on this list are all from the main list of songs that mention California. I haven't found enough songs about "California boys" to make a list yet, but I will if I do.
The phrase "California girls" was popularized by the 1965 Beach Boys hit song "California Girls," but the cultural concept had roots earlier in Hollywood and surf culture. The 1960s beach and surf movie genres beginning with "Gidget" in 1959 promoted the Califonria girl image all around the world, idealizing the archetype of a carefree, healthy, happy, sun-loving young woman from California. |
