Josey Wales is sleeping when an Indian, Lone Watie, puts a horned lizard on a blanket next to Wales' face. Wales wakes up and sits up quickly. Watie says "A horned toad can tell you which way to go. I used to know these things when I was young, but when I got civilized I forgot all these things. I didn't know which way to go. The horned toad says we should go to Mexico." Wales picks it up, hands it to Watie and tells him he can go to Mexico but he has unfinished business in Missouri. The lizard used is a live Blainville's (Coast) Horned Lizard, Phrynosoma blainvillii, a beautiful dark grey one with white chevrons on the back. The film was shot in a number of states, including Oroville, California, where they might have found the lizard.
