This is a low-budget independent film with quirky characters in comic and serious situations. In one of her first films, 10-year-old Scarlett Johansson plays an 11-year-old girl named Amanda (Manny) who goes on the run in her mother's station wagon with her 16-year-old sister Laurel (Lo) after their mother dies. When it becomes obvious that Laurel is pregnant, they drive to an unoccupied winter house in the country and to live. To help Lo with her pregancy, the girls kidnap a woman (Elaine) who works as a clerk in a store that sells baby supplies. One day we see Manny beside a creek saying the pledge of allegiance to a green anole. twenty minutes later we see her again saying the pledge to an anole, then she catches it, puts it in a small wooden box, and gives it to Elaine as a gift, telling her that she hypnotized it in eight minutes. (Manny is always timing things with her calculator wrist watch.) This is probably the craziest thing in the movie - saying the pledge of allegiance to a lizard, but it's typical of the quirky comedy. Still, I have no idea what the lizard and the pledge have to do with anything else in the movie.
