This is a great French crime thriller made by a master of the genre, Jean-Pierre Melville. If you're into heist movies, this one's required viewing.

In the snake and lizard scene, we see an ex-cop turned criminal lying in bed surrounded by empty booze bottles. Instead of seeing pink elephants in his drunken stupor, this guy sees giant spiders that crawl through the door onto his chest as he gapes in horror. Then a boa constrictor and a green iguana come in and crawl up to and onto his bed. They are joined by a chameleon, a Uromastix and some more iguanas. Then rats cover him.

The snake and the lizards may have been a frightening site in 1970, and maybe they still are today to people afraid of reptiles, but it looks to me like a totally harmless collection of common pet-store animals, as if he was being attacked by kittens and puppies. I guess if you're that drunk, even kittens and puppies would be terrifying. The brown one I believe is a type of Uromastyx, a genus of lizard I have not yet seen in another fiction film.
