Alligators and Crocodiles in Movies

The Legend of Tarzan (2016)

Spoiler Alert !

Some of these pictures and descriptions may give away plot details that you might not want to know before watching the film.

This is another Tarzan movie, so you already know the background, mainly that Tarzan was raised by wild animals in Africa and can communicate with them and call them for help. This movie ramps up Tarzan's action hero abilities until it's just another CGI action fantasy. Jane even gets to kick some butt in this one.

The law of Tarzan movies states that there must be a crocodile scene in every movie, so starting at about 1:32:30 we see a steamboat commanded by Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz), an evil colonial capitalist who is pillaging Africa for its diamonds. As Jane watches from shore, George (Samuel L. Jackson) fires up a machine gun and sinks the boat with thousands of bullets that miraculously miss Rom but chase all of his men off the boat. We see crocodiles in the water around the sinking ship and a man getting pulled under. Tarzan gets on the boat to destroy it, and Rom ties him up by the throat. Somehow, while choking, Tarzan is able to make a crocodile mating call loud enough that the many crocodiles waiting onshore hear it, race into the water, and swim to the sinking boat. Tarzan frees himself, then fights and tosses Rom into the water where the crocodiles appear to do away with him. We don't see him die so maybe they're keeping their options open for his return in a sequel. Then Tarzan blows up the boat, saves the world, ends the terrible British colonial exploitation of Africa and everybody lives happily ever after forever in harmony with nature. If you buy that, I've got a great deal on a bridge I can sell you real cheap.

There shouldn't be any crocodiles left in the developed area where the scene takes place, but they're fake CGI crocodiles, and they can live just about anywhere. So watch your back, and avoid making crocodile mating calls when you're in the bathtub.
