Alligators and Crocodiles in Movies

Octopussy (1983)

Spoiler Alert !

Some of these pictures and descriptions may give away plot details that you might not want to know before watching the film.

Roger Moore is James Bond in this farce which has 007 dressed up a circus clown in order to stop a plot by a renegade Russian general to set off a nuclear bomb at a circus on an American air force base in Germany. The circus is run by a beautiful woman nicknamed Octopussy who lives on an island in the middle of a lake in India in a palace populated only by women. The women are a cult of female bandits and smugglers that use a deadly venomous octopus as their symbol. They also work like slaves for Octopussy, rowing her ship and performing in her circus. This is one of the sillier Bond movies, but it does have plenty of action and the Indian locations look great, especially Udaipur, the city on a lake where much of the movie was filmed. There are three scenes with crocodiles in the movie, as well as two scenes with snakes.

In one of the crocodile scenes, James Bond is running from men who are hunting him in India during a tiger hunt that changed into a 007 hunt. After he escapes armed men, a tiger, giant spiders, leeches, and a large snake, he swings on vines like Tarzan before dropping into shallow water where he is chased by a crocodile. He escapes by wading out to a sightseeing boat.

In another scene we learn that Bond is preparing to sneak out to Octopussy's restricted island. We see what looks like a crocodile floating in front of her palace in the middle of a lake. Then the crocodile's mouth opens and we see Bonds head inside it. It's a fake crocodile that Bond is using to hide in to secretly float out to the island.

After Bond spends the night with Octopussy in her huge bed, that's shaped like an octopus of course, several men hired to kill Bond break into the bedroom. Bond and Octopussy and her women fight off the assassins until only the main villain is left. He's a thug who uses a buzzsaw on a string like a yo-yo as a deadly weapon. Bond grabs him and they both jump out of a window into the lake. As they struggle, a crocodile appears and somehow kills only the villain, letting Bond once again hide in his crocodile boat and escape back to the mainland.

Much of the movie was filmed in Rajasthan, India, in the city of Udaipur which sits on a large lake with two large islands in the middle. The palace we see in the movie was turned into a luxury hotel, that can only be reached by boat. It's now nicknamed the "Octopussy Hotel." It's also possible to take a boat out to the other island where there is a huge statue of a crocodile. When I was there in 2009 several restaurants still had nightly showings of the movie.
